Points and miles are program-specific rewards. An award is a booking made through a loyalty program; a transfer moves rewards between eligible programs; and availability means the booking you need can actually be purchased with those rewards.
Learning rewards travel can feel like arriving late to a conversation where everyone speaks in abbreviations. You only need a few terms to start searching intelligently. Here is the version you can read without another glossary open.
The rewards themselves
Points or miles: units earned and redeemed under a rewards program’s rules. The name does not determine a universal cash value.
Transferable points: bank rewards that an eligible account can move to participating loyalty programs. Available partners and conditions depend on the issuer and product.
Welcome offer: an introductory promotion tied to an account and its eligibility and activity requirements. Read the actual offer; do not assume another person’s terms apply to you.
Earning category: a type of eligible purchase that a card rewards at a specified rate. How a merchant is classified can matter.
The booking
Award: a flight, hotel stay, or other reward booked under a loyalty program’s redemption rules.
Award availability: the inventory a program is currently willing to sell using rewards. A paid seat existing does not automatically make it available as a partner award.
Dynamic pricing: reward pricing that can vary with factors such as demand and travel date instead of staying at one fixed number.
Mixed cabin: an itinerary with segments in different cabins. Read every leg before assuming the entire trip has the cabin shown in a search headline.
Moving and using points
Transfer partner: an eligible airline or hotel loyalty program that can receive rewards from another program under its transfer terms.
Transfer ratio: the number of partner points received relative to the bank points sent. Check the current screen instead of assuming a one-to-one rate.
Transfer bonus: a time-limited promotion that may add rewards to an eligible transfer. Its usefulness depends on an actual redemption.
Travel portal: a booking platform, such as one offered by an issuer, where you may be able to use cash, rewards, or a combination under your account’s terms.
The costs and changes
Cents per point: a comparison metric calculated from the cash value displaced by a redemption divided by the rewards used. It is a decision aid, not a guaranteed payout.
Taxes and fees: cash charges that can remain on an award booking. Always inspect the final total.
Redeposit: returning rewards to a loyalty account after a qualifying cancellation, subject to the award’s rules and possible fees.
Positioning flight: a separate flight used to reach the airport where another itinerary begins. Separate tickets can add missed-connection and coordination risk.
The family-specific details
Room occupancy: the number and type of guests permitted in a specific hotel room. Bed photographs do not replace this rule.
Connecting rooms: separate rooms with an interior connecting door. Whether the connection is guaranteed or only requested matters.
Separate reservations: bookings with different confirmation records. Being on the same flight does not necessarily give them all the same servicing or change protection.
Family seating: airline policies or commitments concerning children next to an accompanying adult. Review the airline’s current terms; do not assume it means the whole family sits in one row.
When an unfamiliar term appears on a booking screen, pause and read that program’s definition. The terms on your reservation are more useful than a rule someone remembers from a different trip.

Are miles based on how far we fly?
The name alone does not tell you how a program awards or prices rewards. Check that program’s current earning and redemption rules.
Is an award booking the same as a portal booking?
Not necessarily. A portal redemption and a loyalty-program award can follow different payment, servicing, and cancellation rules.
